The local villages of Knebworth, Woolmer Green, Welwyn,
Datchworth, and Oaklands have access to excellent pre-, primary and
junior schooling.
What is sadly lacking are any secondary education facilities.
Increasingly local children appear to have been placed at the bottom of
the list when it comes to secondary school allocation.
The nearest secondary schools are a 20 minutes car journey away in rush
hour traffic, not within walking distance or a safe cycling distance.
Many local children, and their parents, are forced to make 1000s of car
journeys during peak hours.
What makes sense, for our communities, the environment and our children
is their own secondary school .There would
appear to be an excellent potential site within walking distance of the
centre of Knebworth for the majority of the children.
A local school would help to stop 1000’s of unnecessary car journeys,
thus reducing traffic and pollution.
The obvious need for a secondary school was recognized over a hundred
years ago by none other than the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens when
he drew up plans for the development of “Knebworth Garden Village”.
There is no doubt that we could all benefit from the enhanced education
and leisure facilities that our new school and its recreation areas
would be able to provide.
Whilst we acknowledge that this is a complicated project we feel that
the ideas behind it are sufficiently developed to warrant the relevant
local and central government bodies committing both time and resources
to fully exploring the possibilities with the local community.
We have a dedicated team working hard to ensure that this school comes
into being, but there is much work to do.
So, please support our campaign and help make Lutyen’s vision and that
of all our children a reality.
