Knebworth Parish Plan              (Traffic & Transport Focus Group)

The group has ten members with a broad representation of pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and importantly one disabled driver. Regrettably we have no one who is a regular user of our local bus services and we would be very interested to receive comments on the subject.

The problems of parking and traffic congestion in the High Street are very complex and for the time being we are limiting that part of the project to data collection. Please be assured that any information we gain will not be specific to a vehicle or driver. The local authorities have already provided us with Traffic Flow and Accident statistics which have been very revealing. During the three year period (ending November 2004) by far the greatest number of accidents occurred, not surprisingly, on the A1(M). There were seven accidents in both Old Knebworth Lane and London Road (The High Street) but none along the Stevenage Road, despite the problems with speeding! Fortunately none of these accidents were fatal though two were classified as serious.

During the next few weeks teams will be studying traffic flows at the junctions of Stevenage / Station Road (Trussells Corner), Park Lane / Station Approach, Park Lane / Old Knebworth Lane and Gun Lane / Stockens Green. We hope that the experience we gain will enable us to tackle the more serious issues such as Station Road and the bridge. The information we gather will help us in our negotiations with the Parish Council, Police and Hertfordshire Highways Authority, with a view to producing a "Village Travel Plan" aimed at reducing traffic congestion and speed, and encouraging walking, cycling and improved public transport.

We are very grateful for the hundreds of constructive comments made by residents during the Parish Survey and as always we welcome your help, expertise and suggestions.
