Annual Parish Meeting
The main item to report this month is another very successful Annual Meeting of the Parish of Knebworth, which took place in the Village Hall on the 4th May. Well over 100 members of the public attended to hear the Parish Council report what it had been doing in the past year. This meeting was the 111th such meeting and is a requirement of the Local Government Act. Its purpose is to provide the opportunity for all local government electors to question the council on any matters that may be of concern to them.

The meeting started with the clerk reading out the formal notice of the meeting. The chairman of the council, Mr Ian Gilmore then gave his report of the year’s activities.

The major achievement reported this year was that the new Pavilion was now nearing completion. This project had been made possible by the generous grant funding from the Football Foundation who are contributing over 50% of the cost. However, problems had arisen in negotiating a renewal of our lease with the Herts. County Council for the land forming the Watton Road entrance to the Recreation Ground. The consequence of this was that the Parish Council has so far been unable to take up a substantial grant from the Knebworth Village Trust and instead has had to take on a loan for this sum of money until a new lease is negotiated.

It had been planned that this project would be fully funded before work started. Committee chairpersons then gave their individual verbal reports. Particular praise was given to our clerk Claire Graham for her work in the efficient running of the Council and the managing of our financial accounting to the required standards. This formal part of the meeting took about half an hour and the floor was then open for the popular questions and answers session which is the highlight of the evening.

Question & Answer Session
Among the invited guests was Mr Candler of North Herts. District Council, Mr Greenhill of Hertfordshire Highways, and Councillor Ellis of Herts. County Council. Representatives of the Police were also present. The full transcript of all the questions and answers will soon be available and displayed in our Notice Board in the Library where they can be read at your leisure. Before closing the meeting just after 10 o’clock the chairman thanked all those attending for their continuing support and feedback which is such a vital requirement to keep us motivated. It should again be noted that minutes of all the meetings of the Parish Council are public record and are therefore available for all to see either in our Library or from our clerk.

Annual Parish Council Meeting
The Annual Meeting of the Parish Council took place on the 11th May. This was the first meeting of the new term. This is also the meeting when the council elects the Chairman and chair of committees for the following year. Mr John Bantick was elected Chairman of the Parish Council and signed the Declaration of Acceptance of this Office. Mr Anthony Titmarsh was elected as Vice Chairman and chair of the Finance & General Purpose Committee. Mr John Hunt to chair the Recreation Ground, Dr Graham Fothergill to Planning & Environment and Mr Barry Hall to Village Hall committee. All expressed their commitment to serve our community to the best of their ability in the coming year.
