December 2004

This is the last report for 2004 and only a few meetings to report. The full Council met on the 10th November with a full and interesting agenda.

School report says "Excellent"!
One very interesting item was a glowing report from Mr Barry our representative on the governors of the JMI School who said the recent OFSTEAD report was absolutely first class and had put our village school within the top 10% of such schools in the United Kingdom. This performance was a great credit to the hard work of all the staff and pupils at the school and the Council gave a formal vote of congratulations. It was also reported that the next budget process just completed was probably the toughest ever. Fortunately however, by cutting other items, it had been possible to retain all the teaching staff for next year. Mr Barry was thanked for his report

It's a bit draughty!
The new Pavilion building in the Recreation ground is now well advanced and the work is up to schedule. In the belief that a picture is worth a thousand words the accompanying picture showing the roof trusses being put in place will give some idea of progress and what the building will look like. It is hoped that now that this new building can be seen, that the temporary inconvenience to all the users of the recreation ground will have been a price worth paying for this brand new facility.

The pavilion roof is assembled

Having a swinging time
Regular visitors to the Recreation ground will have seen that a brand new two bay swing set has now been installed for the older children. Readers will remember that the old three bay units were condemned due to their corroded main support legs. The new unit is not as high as the old unit it is replacing but it is the highest that is now allowed under the Health & Safety regulations. The old swings had given many happy years of service to generations of young users and swings are considered an essential item in any play area.

Good turn out for Remembrance Service
This year there was again a record turn out of over 250 persons for the Remembrance Service on the 14th November in Old Knebworth. The road was closed whilst the parade led by the British Legion made its way with police escort to the War Memorial. The younger members of our community were well represented by Navy, Army and Air Cadets and members of all the various sections of the Scout and Guide Group. Reverend Jim Pye took the service and read out the long list of the names of the fallen from our village in the two world wars. The British Legion, our M.P., councillors and representatives of all the groups present then laid their wreaths of red poppies.

Lights on display
By the time this report is published our new Christmas Lights should have been on for a little while. It would be helpful for us have comments from residents so that we can plan ahead for the future. Thank you in advance.

Finally as this is the last report for this year all of us on the Parish Council would like to take this opportunity to wish readers a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
