KNEBWORTH NEWS - APRIL 2013

From Jo Simson - 25th April

Coffee:
Comes courtesy of Knebworth Family of Churches this Saturday April 27 from 10am - 12 noon in St. Martin's Parish Centre in the centre of the village. All more than welcome for coffee, tea, home-made cakes and chat. Fairly traded food items will also be on sale.

Annual Meetings:
It's clearly the season of Annual Meetings. This Sunday sees the Annual meetings of St. Mary's and St. Martin's in that village hub, the Parish Centre. The proceedings start at 6pm. A new Churchwarden for St. Martin's is sought. Contact Rector, Rev'd. Jim Pye on 01438 817396, jim@jimpye.plus.com for more details.

Annual Parish Meeting:
Next week it's the turn of the Parish Council to invite villagers to that other hub of village life, the Village Hall, for the Annual Parish meetings on Wednesday May 1. Refreshments will be served at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. The meting will include reports from Committees on the year's work and an open session of questions from the floor.

Annual WI Meeting:
And on Wednesday May 8, if you're not all meetinged-out, you can pop along to the Annual Meeting of the WI in a third village hub, Trinity Church Hall at 7.45pm.

Local shopping for local foods:
This Sunday April 28 is the fourth in the month, so it's your Farmers' and Crafts Market shopping opportunity in Woolmer Green Village Hall from 9am - 12noon.

Double Yellow Lines:
Are due to come into force from Tuesday April 29 in Park Lane, Lytton Fields, Hornbeam Spring, Watton Road and Oakfields Road. This should make driving to the Village Hall during the day a less exciting experience, at least.

Relax and save a life:
Tuesday May 14 is your opportunity to take the weight off your feet and do nothing. Except give blood as you sit in that space-age chair. The blood doning session is in the Village Hall, Park Lane from 1.15-3.30pm and 5-7.30pm. Call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk to make an appointment, or just turn up.

Save the Children:
April 29 - May 5 is Save the Children Week. Collectors are urgently sought for the Knebworth area. Contact Stephen on 01707 393080.

St. George's Day Service:
Scouts and Guides gather at 3.30pm this Sunday April 21 in St. Martin's Church to celebrate St. George. Note this is a later time than originally planned!

Cancellations and Coffee:
Well, I am beginning to lack confidence in my diary dates. I gather that the Knebworth Park Cricket Club Car Boot Sale on April 7 was cancelled owing to a waterlogged pitch. The appointment for the Doctors' Practice Open Day on April 13 was cancelled (again). If this leaves you, like me, feeling the need for a calming chat over a cuppa - note the LATER date of this month's Knebworth Family of Churches coffee morning. All more than welcome on Saturday April 27 from 10am - 12 noon for coffee, tea, home-made cakes and chat. Fairly traded food items will also be on sale.

Anyone for a walk?
The next Knebworth Walking Group outing is on St. George's Day itself, Tuesday April 23. To celebrate Joy and Barry Hall (he gets about, doesn’t he?) will be leading a walk from the George and Dragon in Watton at Stone. Not for the faint-hearted, the route is just over five miles. If you're not sure how to get there, fear not. The group will be meeting, as usual, at 10am in the Village Hall Car Park.

Anyone for Boules?
If you notice some people wearing berets using the Boules court at the Station Pub next Monday April 22 from 7pm, it's probably the Twinning Association team. They are practising for Boules matches on June 3 (against our jumelle - Châtelaillon Plage) and July 14 (Bastille Day Intertwinning Cup). Barry Hall and David Woodman will be there and look forward to meeting anyone who would like to join them.

Annual Church Meetings:
The Annual meetings of St. Mary's and St. Martin's will be held in St. Martin's Parish Centre next Sunday 28 April, starting at 6pm. A new Churchwarden for St. Martin's will be appointed at the meetings. Contact Rector, Rev'd. Jim Pye on 01438 816396, jim@jimpye.plus.com for more details.

Dine Out:
You need go no further than St. Martin's Parish Centre for a splendid meal out next month. There will be five main courses to choose from, and a number of desserts for just £10 on Saturday May 11 in aid of Church funds. For more details contact Penny Paton on 01438 313241

If it's spring it must be Sping Cleaning:
Well, it might not seem like Spring, but it is definitely Spring Cleaning Morning this Saturday April 13 in St. Martin's Church, starting at 9.30am. Old and young alike are welcome to bring along the dusters and polish. Sitting down jobs and lower reaches are promised as well as the stretching exercise. All welcome.

Surgery Open Day:
Spring cleaners can pop along to the Surgery in Station Road once they've got the Church spotless. Not, it is to be hoped, to get those aching backs looked at, but to find out the latest developments at the Surgery Open Day. The day runs from 10am-3pm.

East of England Food Festival:
Celebrate all that's good to eat and drink from across the eastern region and beyond. A huge range of drink, art, craft and gift products will be on offer at the East of England Food Festival running from 10am-5pm this Saturday and Sunday April 13 and 14 up at Knebworth House and Country Park. A full programme of cookery demonstrations, wine and beer tasting sessions and entertainment for all the family are also promised. Admission £9, family £32, 10% discount if booked online at www.knebworthhouse.com.

Not so Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra:
Various tutors will be leading this six week Stevenage and Knebworth Arts Group course starting at 7.30pm next Wednesday April 17 in Trinity Church, Park Lane. Starting with rare footage of an early performance of Benjamin Britten's young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, the course covers the layout and development of the orchestra. The roles of the four sections: strings, brass, woodwind and percussion will be looked at under the guidance of a professional musician. Talented young persons will demonstrate the various instruments and the course will culminate in a live concert. Cost £21. For full details of the summer programme visit
www.stevenageandknebworthartsgroup.com.

Annual Parish Meeting:
Mark the date in your diaries - I am horrified to note that it is just four weeks away - Wednesday May 1st at 8pm in Knebworth Village Hall.

New members and visitors more than welcome. Start decorating your egg for the decorated egg competition now. The ladies,e ver-optimistic, will also have a stall entitled 'Spring Again'. Not quite sure what function the word 'again' is performing there. Perhaps 'Will it ever be' should be tacked at the beginning.
