From Jo Simson - 28th March

Walk of Witness:
Tomorrow, 29 March is Good Friday, ironically the saddest day in the Christian Calendar. Knebworth Family of Churches will be carrying the cross through the village stopping at each for prayer, Bible reading and hymns as they remember Christ's crucifixion and death. White crosses will also be on display outside the Churches bearing the signatures of Christ's followers in the congregations. The Walk of Witness sets out at 11am from Trinity Church in Park Lane and finishes - with hot cross buns - at St. Thomas More Church.

Easter Egg Hunt:
It's possible the snow will be gone by Easter Sunday March 31. If it isn't, I suppose it will be easier to hide the eggs for hunting in the Robin Hood and Little John Easter Egg hunt for children which takes place at 4.30pm.

Medieval Jousting:
The jousters should keep warm, at any rate, with all that kit on. The annual Jousting Tournament to herald Easter will take place up at Knebworth House and Country Park this week-end on Easter Sunday March 31 and Bank Holiday Monday April 1. Show times are 12.30pm and 2.30pm, but I note the ominous wording 'subject to weather'. Normal park admission prices apply - £9 each, or family ticket £32 with a 10% discount for online booking at www.knebworthhouse.com/tickets.

Knebworth and District Gardening Club Spring Show:
Yes I did say Spring. Let's hope it will have arrived by Saturday April 6. The Show takes place in St. Martin's Parish Centre, next to St. Martin's Church from 12noon, free admission. Flowers, cookery and children's classes will all be on show. Entry to the children's classes is also free. For more information contact show secretary Gill Griffin on 01438 222040 or Sheila Read on 01438 318441.

Car Boot Sale:
Skip the next bit while I make my usual crack about how many car boots can one household want? This one is a new departure for Knebworth Park Cricket Club who are forsaking the willow and leather on Sunday April 7 from 11am - 2pm. So we are invited to spend the Easter week-end (weather very likely dictating rather than permitting) clearing out our garage or loft for saleable items. £7 a pitch for cars, £10 small vans (no trade). A barbecue and (much-needed) hot drinks will be on sale. Contact Natasha on 07775 866195 or Nick on 07771 997753.

Surgery Open Day:
Watch this space for details of the Surgery Open Day on Saturday April 13 from 10am-3pm. Events will include the opportunity for a free health check. All proceeds to Keech Hospice Care.

Easter Journey:
Knebworth and surround villages are experiencing the Easter Journey for themselves this week. St. Martin's Church in the centre of the village is transformed into scenes from Holy Week - the week leading up to Easter. The Passover Supper, the tomb and Joseph of Arimathea's garden are all taking place of the normal pews. This Sunday March 24 is Palm Sunday and all are welcome to the 10am Service to experience the Journey for themselves, meet the characters who played a part in it - from Judas and Peter to Joseph of Arimathea - and experience the sights sounds and smells.

Springing Round the Heath:
Knebworth walkers do it whatever the weather. Though spring has been distinctly unpromising so far, they are looking forward to their next jaunt - around Hertford Heath - on Tuesday march 26. Meet at Knebworth Village Hall car park in Park Lane in time to set off at 10am. The route is around 4½ miles and the plan is to finish with lunch in the Goat Pub.

A Night at the Races:
Knebworth Football Club, meanwhile, plan some indoor sport. Their Race Night is on Thursday March 28 in the Red Lion, Woolmer Green, starting at 7pm. Free admission and a guarantee that no one will get wet as they cheer their horses on. (I'm guessing the horses will be on screen).

Sunday Ladies:
Well, I am sure ladies are ladies all week round. But for Knebworth Tennis Club purposes the Sunday Ladies practise from 10.30am - 12noon. To find out more about how you can get in on the act email Click Here.

Keeping us in Suspense:
Well not precisely us, but socks. A key item of costume for KATS (Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society) next production is a pair of sock suspenders. Not your everyday item of clothing I grant you, but if you do have any and would be prepared to lend them for performances of Alan Bennett's hilarious 'Habeas Corpus' in May, Viv Richardson would be delighted to hear from you on 01438 367447.

Farmers' and Craft Market:
Sunday March 24 is the fourth Sunday of the month, so it must be time for the Farmers' and Craft Market in Woolmer Green Village Hall, Hall Lane, off Bridge Street, from 9am - 12noon.

Mothering Sunday:
Is of course this Sunday March 10. Apologies from this month's editor of the Parish News for any confusion caused. She was suffering from the temporary fixation that it was next Sunday March 17. Mothering Sunday, that's THIS Sunday March 10 will be celebrated with an All Age Service at 10am in St. Martin's Church in the centre of the village. In honour of the day there will be flowers for the ladies. Many thanks to the ladies who prepare the posies.
