KNEBWORTH NEWS - August 2012

From Jo Simson - 30th August

RAMBLING ROSES:
Or rather Kathie(s). Kathie Painter will be leading her Saturday morning rambles as usual Bank Holiday week-end notwithstanding. This week she stays close to home - setting out from the Station Pub at 10am. Walks are 4-5 miles and all are welcome. Contact Kathie for more details on 01438 940594.

KNEBWORTH AND DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB
GO ON THE ROAD TO GRAVELEY:

The Knebworth and District Gardening Club Autumn show is on September 2 at Gravely Garden Centre this year. The doors open to visitors at 12noon and presentations to winners take place at 4.15pm. There is something for all the family. Classes include flowers, vegetables, flower arranging, cookery, children's section, arts and crafts AND photography. And you thought it was just about gardening! For further details/to exhibit in any of the classes contact Jill Griffin on 01438 222040 or Sheila Read on 01438 318441.

STEPPING STONE PRE SCHOOL OPEN DAY:
School's back after Summer next week. Stepping Stone Pre School will be opening the doors of their new premises for an Open Day. Come and see them on Tuesday September 4 from 9am-3.30pm in the Pavilion of the Recreation Ground off Watton Road/Stevenage Road. Their first day of term is Wednesday September 5th.

ADAM AND EVE THE MUSICAL:
Knebworth's own Mary and Stephen Swann composed several musicals together. Sadly, Stephen died suddenly last September. Adam and Eve will be performed on October 20 in tribute to him. Singing rehearsals start on Friday September 7. If you'd like to join the chorus, contact Jeffrey Goodwin on 01438 365918.

ON YOUR BIKES:
There are usually blackberry picking opportunities for those with the forethought and planning who take to their bikes for the Historic Churches Trust Sponsored Bike'n'Hike. That is on September 8. Riders are sought for St. Mary's and St. Martin's, who will receive 50% of the proceeds. If interested, contact Penny Paton on 01438 313421.

Thousands of cars will be on display, and for sale. There will also be an autojumble sale, live commentary, arena displays and kit and custom cars and pre- and post-war classics. They invite you to visit them on Tuesday September 4 from 9am-3.30pm in the Pavilion of the Recreation Ground off Watton Road/Stevenage Road.

KNEBWORTH COUNTRY SHOW:
Up at Knebworth House this week-end August 11/12, there is a good, old-fashioned Country Show. It's a family show with entertainment from 11am-5pm including birds of prey and working dogs. Arts, crafts, gifts and food marquees are all on offer. On Sunday there's a dog show, so bring along a canine friend and have a go. Normal Park admission prices (£8/head, £28 family, 10% discount for online bookings, under-4s free) apply.

LUNCH CLUB TAKES A SUMMER BREAK:
One of the groups not running all through the summer is the Link Up Lunch Club which meets on Wednesday in the Village Hall. They are taking their summer break next Wednesday August 15 and the following Wednesday August 22, so I am afraid you will have to make your own lunch on those two weeks. Or get someone to invite you out.

PRAYER TORCH RELAY:
One of the groups which always does meet in the summer is the Knebworth Family of Churches Good Egg Holiday Club. The Club is running, literally, this week with a Global Games theme. Their closing ceremony will include a Prayer Torch Relay. The Prayer Torch will be taken to each Church in the village over this week-end Saturday/Sunday August 11 and 12 and the children's prayers will be prayed at the beginning of each Church service.
SUMMER WALKS: This Saturday's ramble led by Kathie Painter will set out from Wytch End, Homefield Lane, Langley. All the walks are 4-5 miles and set out at 10am. For more details contact Kathie on 01438 950594.

KNEBWORTH YOUTH PROJECT:
Will start the Autumn term in good shape. County Councillor Richard Thake has allocated £1,000 from his locality budget to buy new equipment and improve the Pavilion Youth Café/Club. North Herts District council has also chipped in with a £500 grant to buy a new games console and some Wii games. The Project runs sessions on Thursday at the Pavilion in the recreation ground off Watton Road and on Friday in Trinity Church.

STEPPING STONE PRE SCHOOL IS ON THE MOVE:
Stepping Stone Pre School will be starting the new term in the Pavilion in the Recreation Ground. They plan to throw open their new doors for an Open Day during the first week of September. Contact Lynda MacPherson on 01438 81070 for more information.

RINGING IN THE GAMES - RINGING IN THE AUTUMN:
Did you hear the bells at 8.12am on Friday 27 July. The bells at St. Mary's and St. Martin's rang out to welcome in the Olympic Games, thanks to some enthusiastic early rising from Rector Jim Pye and a cross-section of the congregation of all ages. The handbells of St. Mary's and St. Martin's have been ringing regularly on Thursday evenings. If you would like to try your hand, they are running some introductory sessions this September. You don't have to be able to read music. Contact Viv Perry on 07887 661786 for more details.

RAMBLING ROSES:
The roses are amazing this summer - and so are Knebworth ramblers. They continue their regular fortnightly Tuesday morning walks throughout the summer. The next is next Tuesday August 7, setting out from the Raven Pub at Hexton and returning for a pub lunch. Hexton is a lovely hamlet. If you would like to join the walk, meet at Knebworth Village Hall Car Park for a 10am start to arrange car shares. All welcome, including well-behaved dogs on leads.

BEETLE DRIVE:
The WI are another group which keeps going through the summer. Their meeting at 7.45pm next Wednesday August 8 in Trinity Church Hall has a good, old-fashioned look. They will be having a good, old-fashioned Beetle Drive. New members and guests welcome.

KNEBWORTH COUNTRY SHOW:
