KNEBWORTH NEWS - May 2012

From Jo Simson - 24th May

Congratulations:
To the twelve walkers from Datchworth and Knebworth who took part in the East Herts. Christian Aid walk on Saturday May 12. Between them they covered 265 miles. Eight of the twelve walkers completed the whole 43Km. Meanwhile the provisional total from the house-to-house envelope collection stands at £3,361.12. A tremendous result.

Spring Clean for the Queen:
Twelve (but a different set of people) also happens to be the number of litter pickers who turned up to spring clean the village for the Jubilee on Saturday 19 May, and collected 18 bags of rubbish.

Lily-Lops Table Tops Sale:
Say that and you've said a mouthful. You are invited to come and join the fun this Saturday 26 May from 10am - 12 noon in St. Martin's Parish Centre. The Sale is in loving memory of Lily Ward and in aid of the Toddlerific toddler group run by Bridgebuilders Christian Trust and the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity (SANDS). To book a table top (£8) contact Beckie Ward on 07812 906766.

Village Schools Netball Tournament:
Knebworth Primary and Nursery School hosts its first ever Village Primary Schools Netball Tournament this Saturday May 26. The winning team will be presented annually with a shield. The Steen Family Memorial Shield commemorates the Steen family, and particularly the late Robert Steen, who have sponsored Knebworth's netball team for the past fifteen years. The winning team will also receive medals. Thanks to local businesses, there will also be a raffle on the day. To sponsor the event contact the school on 01438 812184.

Communicating Doors:
Tickets for the Saturday night performance of KATS (Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society) production of Communicating Doors by Alan Ayckbourn are selling like hot cakes. There are still plenty available for tonight (May 24) and tomorrow night (May 25) though. Doors open at 7.15pm and curtain is up at 7.45pm in the Village Hall. To book tickets (£6.50, concessions £5.50) for this time-travelling, comedy thrillercontact Box Office Jo Simson on 01438 814166 or 07952 199183, or pop into Village News in Station Road.

Datchworth Open Gardens:
The cakes may not be hot but there will certainly be cream teas up the hill at Datchworth Open Gardens this Sunday May 27 from mid-day to 5pm. Eleven gardens will be open, and this year's scarecrows will be dressed in a Jubilee theme. Live music, Ploughman's lunches and a barbecue are also on offer. Admission £5 for adults, under-12 free. All proceeds to All Saints Church, The Red Cross and the Friends of Danesbury/QVM hospital.

Storytime Rhymes:
Did you know that there is a free storytime session in Knebworth Library in St. Martin's Road every term-time Tuesday from 2.30-3pm? Just the thing to chase those rainy day blues away for under-5s and their carers.

Live Music in the Locals:
This Friday May 18 sees a somewhat unusual act in the Lytton Arms up in Old Knebworth. The Delta 'Ladies' are not all they appear to be. They entertain on fiddle and guitar with Country to Blue Grass AND Hendrix to Gershwin. Interesting.

Phase 2:
The following night, Saturday May 19th, it's the turn of the Robin Hood and Little John Pub in Rabley Heath. They invite you to an evening of live music, courtesy of Phase 2 who play music from the 1950s to the 2000s. I am not sure if Doris gets her oats (my age is showing).

Litter Picking Locals:
The Parish Council invite us to prepare for the Jubilee celebrations by picking litter around the village this Saturday May 19. All more than welcome. Meet in the Village Hall car park at 9am. Litter-picking equipment will be supplied.

Coffee Cake and Chat:
Litter pickers can reward themselves for their hard work at the Knebworth Family of Churches Coffee morning on Saturday, in St. Martin's Parish Centre, St. Martin's Green, from 10am-12noon. Tea, home-made cakes and fairly traded goods will also be on offer and all proceeds go to the Knebworth Youth Project.

Communicating Doors:
Only just over a week now till the doors open at the Village Hall for KATS (Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society) production of Communicating Doors by Alan Ayckbourn. This time-travelling, comedy thrillers is set in a hotel suite where a communicating door enables the cast to travel between 1974, 1994 and 2014 and change the course of their history. It all begins in 2014, when a Dominatrix is invited to visit a customer, not for her usual offices, but to witness a confession. KATS are thrilled to be joined by two talented young actors for this production, Stephen Magona and Zoe Baynes-Davidge. The somewhat damp weather of late seems to have encouraged more people than usual to read about the production in the Parish News, and advance tickets are selling well so early booking is recommended. Contact Box Office Jo Simson on 01438 814166 or 07952 199183, or dodge the showers to pop into Village News in Station Road. Curtain is up at 7.45pm, there is a licensed bar and tickets cost £6.50 (concession £5.50).

Ditch the Workout, Join the Party:
Zumba has arrived in the Village Hall. Charlotte Philo's classes run from 6-6.50pm (Zumba Gold) and 7-8pm (Zumba Fitness) on a Monday evening. Cost is £5 per session. Zumba Fitness is an easy to follow Latin-inspired dance fitness session. Zumba Gold has all the fun of a basic class, but lower impact moves and is suitable for beginners and 50+. For more information contact Charlotte on 07854 306774, or send an email to charlotte_zumba@hotmail.co.uk.
