KNEBWORTH NEWS - March 2012

From Jo Simson - 22nd March

Flowers for the Ladies:
At last Sunday's Mothering Sunday Service in St. Martin's were actually prepared by Sally Groves and Sue Howcutt - apologies for causing alarm and despondency to the Mothers' Union, and many thanks to Sally and Sue for the lovely daffodils and greenery which are now brightening my windowsill.

Put a Spring in Your Step:
I am typing this on the first official day of Spring. Why not celebrate the signs of new growth by joining Kathie Painter for a Saturday morning walk this Saturday March 24? Meet at the Cross Keys in Gustard Wood for a 10am start. The walks are all 4-5 miles. All welcome, including dogs, contact Kathie on 01438 940594 for more details.

Gentlemen:
You can fortify yourselves for that walk at the Andrew Barclay memorial Gentlemen's Breakfast this Saturday March 24 in Trinity Church Hall, Park Lane, from 9am. This special event is in honour of the memory of Andrew who, two years ago, had the vision of getting together the gentlemen of the Knebworth Family of Churches to share in fellowship and discussion fuelled by a hearty breakfast. All welcome but tell John Steele NOW if you want to come by 'phoning 01727 858152 as the deadline has passed. All proceeds to the Isobel Hospice.

Parish Open Day:
Knebworth House and County Park celebrates the start of its 2012 season by inviting Knebworth residents for a free visit this Sunday 25 March. The Park opens at 11am and you need to enter by the white gate by St. Mary's and bring proof that you are a Knebworthian. A copy of Knebworth Parish News would be perfect. You can buy one of those in Village News, Station Road for just 60p. Amongst the Knebworth residents enjoying the day will be current and former pupils of Knebworth School and their families, celebrating the School's centenary with a picnic from 12 noon onwards. Bring a picnic and see how many of your peers you can recognise!

Woolmer Green Farmers' and Craft Market:
A regular shopping opportunity for local foods and crafts takes place in Woolmer Green Village Hall, Hall Lane, just off Bridge Road on the fourth Sunday of the month from 9.30am-1pm. That means this Sunday March 25. So you lose and hour and possibly a lie-in. Still it's all good fun.

Tremendous result:
Congratulations to Suzanne Hodges and Judith Clark. Their China Wall Ball in aid of the Institute of Cancer Research on 3 March raised the magnificent sum of £5,300, exceeding their target for a year's fundraising in one night!
Good Eggs Remember Easter: There are still some spaces in the Knebworth Family of Churches Easter Holiday Club for School Years 0-6. The Club runs on three mornings from 3-5 April. Contact Gill Hughes, 01438 813949, GoodEggClubBookings@gmail.com for further information.

Cake Stall:
Don't forget the Cake Stall this Saturday morning on St. Martin's Green from 9.30am. The ideal opportunity to spoil your Mum with some delicious goodies on Mothering Sunday.

Flowers for the Ladies:
Mums will be remembered particularly this Sunday 17 March at the All Age Mothering Sunday Service in St. Martin's at 10am. There will be flowers for all the ladies - mums or not - courtesy of the Mothers' Union.

Brace Yourselves for a Walk:
Probably the cheapest exercise and excellent for lifting the spirits and toning the muscles. Knebworth embraces walking wholeheartedly. There are now not only fortnightly walks on a Tuesday morning, but also weekly walks on a Saturday morning - so worker have no excuse for idleness. This Saturday's walk sets off from Emily's Teashop at Whitwell - but you will have to wait for that sustaining cuppa till you get back. Meet at 10am. The walks are all 4-5 miles and led by Kathie Painter. All welcome, including dogs, contact Kathie on 01438 940594 for more details.

The next Tuesday morning walk:
Is next Tuesday 20 March, meeting at the Village Hall car park at 10am to arrange car shares. That one is led by Viv Perry and sets off from the Bell, Town Lane, Benington, SG2 7LA, if you want to go straight there. All welcome, including well-behaved dogs on leads.

Easter comes to St. Martin's next week:
Children from local schools will be taking an Easter Journey in St. Martin's Church next week. Let Justice Prevail on Friday March 2:
Is the theme for this year's Women's World Day of Prayer. Slightly misleadingly named, the event is prepared by women, but it is for everyone. Prepared this year by the women of Malaysia, the idea is that, as the event is worldwide, prayers will be said somewhere in the world throughout the 24 hour period. So in Knebworth you need only come along to Trinity Church, Park Lane  at 2pm this Friday March 2.

The China Wall Ball:
Is actually in the Village Hall, this Saturday March 3. It's in aid of The Institute of Cancer Reasearch. The organisers of the Ball, Suzanne Hodges  and Judith Clark are walking part of the Great Wall of China in aid of the Institute later this year. Meanwhil back at Saturday March 3, there will be bubles and nibbles on arrival, a three course meal, live band, magician, bar and auction. All for the cost of £40. Tickets from Suzanne (07846 777017) or Judith (07849 475305).

Comedy Night:
It's fun, fun, fun all the way in Knebworth my home village. The Spring must definitely be Sprung. Next Saturday March 10 Friends of Knebworth School invite us to laugh our socks off at a Comedy Night, also in the Village Hall. Licensed bar and tickets are £12.50, but you have to buy them in advance from Mrs J Wheeler, 62 Stevenage Road, Knebworth, SG3 6NN. Cheques payable to her.

Walk your way to a healthy heart:
Knebworth Walking Group's ramble next Tuesday March 6 will be a circular route from the Strathmore Arms, St. Pauls Walden. All welcome, including well-behaved dogs on leads. Meet at the Village Hall car park at 10am.

Remember Easter:
Well you are unlikely to forget, but the Knebworth Family of Churches Good Egg Easter Club is inviting children to remember all sorts of reasons for celebrating it. Their holiday club runs from 3-5 April 10am-12noon, and all children from School years Reception to 6 are more than welcome. Places are free, though donations are welcome, and they must be pre-booked by March 11. Contact Gill Hughes, 01438 813949, for further information GoodEggClubBookings@gmail.com
