KNEBWORTH NEWS - January 2012

From Jo Simson - 26th January

Knebworth School Open 'Evening':
Pupils in all year groups from Knebworth Primary and Nursery School in Swangleys Lane have been joining in a National Gallery-inspired  project 'Take One Picture'. Taking their inspiration from Still Life with Drinking Horn painted by Dutch master Willem Kalf in 1653, the children have worked across the curriculum to produce rugs, spiral poems, researched lobsters and created a luxury box complete with luxuries. You are invited to view the results of their hard work today, Thursday January 26, from 3.30pm - 6.30pm.

Surgery with our MP:
Stephen McPartland holds his monthly surgery for constituents tomorrow Friday January 27 from 9.30am in the CVS portakabin Southgate in Stevenage. To book an appointment call 01438 728139 or email Stephen@stephenmcpartland.co.uk.

See in the New Year all over again:
This Saturday 28 January  St. Martin's Church with the Stevenage Symphony Orchestra.  Tickets £9 (concessions £7) are available in advance from Gower Interiors in the High Street or at the door and the concert starts at 7.30pm.

Stars in our eyes:
Just up the road in Welwyn, locally-based charity CPRE Hertfordshire, the county branch of the national charity Campaign to Protect Rural England, invite us to look at the stars. The Star Count is designed to calculate the effect of intrusive light pollution. Simply count the number of stars you can see in the constellation of Orion tonight , January 26 or tomorrow, January 27 and log on to www.cpreherts.org.uk to register the number. You'll find full details and an illustration of the constellation on the website. The results will be used to create a light pollution map, which will be compared with earlier versions.

Darlings You Were Wonderful:
I am sure Knebworth Players will be, as they perform this One Act Play by Derek Lomas together with other entertainment next Friday and Saturday February 3 and 4 at 8pm in the Village Hall. Tickets (£7, concessions £6) include table nibbles and a licensed bar is available. For tickets call 01438 226894 or pop into Village News in Station Road.

Have you got the heart for a run?:
The term 'fun run' always strikes me as an oxymoron, but plenty of people do enjoy it. You can enjoy some good cardio-vascular exercise and raise funds for the British Heart Foundation at the same time up at Knebworth House on Sunday February 26. Watch this space for more details.

Week of prayer for Christian Unity - CORRECTION:
Every day is a school day. I recently added to knowledge base the information that, whilst the week of Christian Unity is always on the same dates of 18-15 January, it is celebrated in Knebworth during a Calendar week. So the short act of worship at noon takes place every day this week in St. Martin's Church - and that is why you can hear the bell ringing at mid-day. I was right about the United Service, though, phew. That IS this Sunday January 22 at 10.30am in Trinity Church Park Lane. And it IS followed by a Bring and Share lunch. Plus all ARE more than welcome.

Farmers' Market:
This Sunday January 22, you have your monthly opportunity to stock up on local produce in Woolmer Green Village Hall from 9am-12noon. This extended market now includes crafts as well.

Flight of fancy for the walking group:
Next Tuesday January 24 the Knebworth Walking Group will be flying off to Panshanger Airfield, Welwyn Garden City, to start their walk at approximately 10.20am. Cafeteria chef, Mario, is happy to lay on lunch if pre-ordered at the start of the walk, so it's all good. Nwcomers and car sharers can meet as usual in Knebworth Village Hall car park at 10am.

Happy New Year from Stevenage Symphony Orchestra:
Who are seeing the New(ish) Year in with a concert in St. Martin's Church on Saturday January 28 at 7.30pm. Opening with the restless seascape of Fingal's Cave in Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture, the programme moves on to Mozart's great Clarinet Concerto, featuring acclaimed soloist James Mainwaring. The concert finishes with the most heroic and romantic of Sibelius Symphonies: No 2.  Tickets £9 (concessions £7) are available in advance from Gower Interiors in the High Street or at the door.

Quizzical date for your diaries:
KATS (Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society) invite us to beat the winter blues with a 'fun'draising' Quiz Night on Saturday 25 February in St. Martin's Parish Centre. Tables of 8, or they will find you a team to join. Tickets are £8.50 to include a fish'n'chip supper and you can book them from Jo Simson on 01438 814166, email jo.simson@ntlworld.com

Happy Easter:
No, it's not a typo. I just wanted to draw your attention to Fairtrade Easter Eggs which explain the Christian understanding of East on the box. For 2012 the eggs include a free 8-page story book. The crucial information, though (if you will pardon the pun), is that they can be ordered with free delivery through if orders and money are received by next Thursday 19 January. Cost is £3.99 per egg. For more details contact Penny Paton on 01438 313241.

Link up lunch club:
All over the village members and volunteers have been counting down the days to the re-opening of the delightful Link Up Lunch Club after its Christmas break this Wednesday 11 January at 12.30pm in the Village Hall. Excellent company and a hot two-course meal followed by tea/coffee can be yours for just £3.50 a week. Once a month there is a piano-bar effect, when John Hunt comes in to tickle the ivories while the members eat. If you'd like to sample what's on offer, contact Chairman Sally Mercer on 01438 817068.

Village Directory:
I am indebted to the annual update of the village directory for Sally Mercer's number. That can be found in the centre pages of this month's Parish News, which can be yours for just 60p from Village News, Station Road, or St. Martin's Church in the centre of the village. Or take out a 12-month subscription for the price of 10 at just £6/year by calling Peter Sinclair on 01438 812236 (hard copy) or Rev'd. Jim Pye, 15 St. Martin's Road, Knebworth SG3 6ER (electronic pdf file, include cheque payable to Knebworth PCC and contact details including email address).

Farmers' Market:
Looking forward to next Sunday 22 January, you have your monthly opportunity to stock up on local produce in Woolmer Green Village Hall from 9am-12noon. This extended market now includes crafts as well.

Week of prayer for Christian Unity:
Just to fool us all, the week of Prayer for Christian Unity runs from Wednesday to Wednesday January 18 - 25. A short act of worship will be held each day in one of our Churches during that period, and Sunday January 22 will see a United Service at 10.30am in Trinity Church, Park Lane (Anglicans note, you have NO 10am Service in St. Martin's that day) followed by a shared lunch. All more than welcome.

A Happy New Year To All

Some of whom will be world record-breakers this year. 108 of you were among the 18,414 carollers taking part in The Premier Christian Media Carol Singing World Record attempt on Sunday December 18 in the twelfth century Parish church of St. Mary's up in Knebworth Park. It will take the Guinness Book of Records up to 9 months to verify the data, but if you would like proof positive that you were there, a 16-minute DVD is available from Rev'd. Jim Pye on jim@jimpye.plus.com.

Who ate all the mince pies? Well 22 'drowned rats' (I quote) certainly tucked in on New Year's Day when they got back from the New Year's Day Ramble. Many thanks to the ladies of the WI for providing them. If you feel less than svelte after your Christmas calorie intake, the next ramble will be on Tuesday January 10, led by Kathie Painter from the Bright Star Inn at Peter's Green. All welcome, including well-behaved dogs on leads. Meet in Knebworth Village Hall Car Park at 10am to arrange car-sharing.

Epiphany Carols:
You might be forgiven for thinking, as you pull down the tinsel and recycle the cards, that Christmas is over. Not so, the Wise Men have yet to arrive with their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh - and perhaps that little something Father Christmas forgot for you. Knebworth Family of Churches celebrate this arrival this Sunday January 8 with an Epiphany Carol Service at 5.30pm in the Catholic church of St. Thomas More, London Road. All welcome.

Stop Press News from Stepping Stone Pre-School:
Stepping Stone Pre-School has received a temporary reprieve from North Hertfordshire Homes, who plan to redevelop their London Road site. NHH has given the Pre-School an extension to the end of the Summer 2012 term in order to allow them to organise a managed relocation. So they re-opened for business as usual yesterday, Wednesday January 4.
