TONIGHT Thursday December 22 pop up to The Lytton Arms for Christmas Carols round the tree at 5.30pm. Free mince pies and a raffle will also be on offer in aid of the Herts Air Ambulance Service.

Christmas Gift:

Christmas Times:
If you need a doctor or Chemist between the mistletoe and wine you need to know that the surgery is closed December 24-27 inclusive and both Lloyds chemists are closed on December 25 and 26. One of them will be open from 10am-2pm on Tuesday December 27. Thereafter opening times are as normal.

Celebrate the birth of Christ at our Christmas Services:
There are children's Christmas Services at 4pm (Crib Service) in St. Martin's and 6pm (Children's Mass and Nativity) in the Catholic Church of St. Thomas More on Christmas Eve. All three village Churches - Trinity, Park Lane, St. Martin's and St. Thomas More - have Communion Services on Christmas Eve starting at 11.30pm. On Christmas Day the Catholic and Anglican Services are at 8am (Holy Communion is up at St. Mary's in Knebworth Park) and all three Churches have 10am Services (Anglican Family Communion is down in St. Martin's).

Blow the Christmas Cobwebs Away with a New Year's Day Walk:
The traditional new Year's Day walk sets out from the Village Hall Car Park at 1.30pm to allow you to recover from your New Year's Eve celebrations. The ladies of the WI will be rallying round to provide returning walkers with hot drinks and mince pies. All welcome.

Knebworth Walking Group Extra:
Two things I know about Kathie Painter. She is highly organised and she loves walking. Hence she is taking time out this Saturday 17 December to lead a bonus walk from the Lytton Arms, setting out at 10am. The distance is 4-5 miles. All welcome, including dogs, meet at the Pub.

Knebworth Community Chorus Sings for Christmas:
Round off a perfect day this Saturday December 17 with Carols and seasonal songs in St. Martin's Church at 7pm. As well as audience participation, the Chorus offer some classic favourites from special guest singer James Gower, accompanied by pianist Nicholas Robinson and a performance of Granddad's Story by Knebworth Youth Choir let by composer Sam Jellett. Tickets £10 (children £5) from Village News, Station Road or call 01438 816010.

Be a Record Breaker:
On Sunday December 18 at the Carol Service in St. Mary's the congregation will be joining in an attempt to break the current World Record for the largest number of people singing the same carols. 15,000 people are needed - but don't worry. They don't all have to squeeze into the lovely twelfth century Parochial Church in Knebworth Park. The event is taking place simultaneously at multiple locations across the country. But numbers will be independently counted. So the more the merrier.

Village Carol Singing:
Knebworth Family of Churches are hoping for a good turnout when they carol sing around the village on Tuesday December 20. They will be collecting money on behalf of The Living Room, the Stevenage-based charity which works to break the cycle of addiction. All welcome, carol sheets provided. Meet outside the Station at 6pm. If you can't make the start, contact Jo Simson, jo.simson@ntlworld.com, 01438 814166, for a timed route so you can join in later.

More Carol Singing:
Next Thursday December 22 pop back to The Lytton Arms for Christmas Carols round the tree at 5.30pm. Free mince pies and a raffle will also be on offer in aid of the Herts Air Ambulance Service.

St. Mary's and St. Martin's Christmas Fair:
The organisers calculate the mulled wine, mince pies, sausage rolls, Christmas gifts and crafts went down a treat. Almost £1,000 was raised for Church Funds and the Fair finished with a good old Carol Sing led by the Knebworth Community Chorus.

Christmas Tree Memorial Stars Service:
This Saturday December 10, at 4pm in St. Martin's Church, there's will be an opportunity to write the name of your deceased loved one on a star to decorate the Church Christmas tree. All welcome.

Knebworth Walking Group:
Will be hoping for a zero calorie balance when they finish their Christmas Walk next Tuesday December 13 with Christmas Lunch at the Plume of Feathers, Tewin. It's too late to book a lunch, but walkers welcome. Meet at 10am in the Village Hall Car Park.

Carol Singing is in the air:
Knebworth Community Chorus will be in action again next Saturday December 17 when they Sing for Christmas in St. Martin's Church from 7pm.

Christmas gift Suggestion:

Christmas Fair:
OK, so now it really is December and we can start thinking about Christmas in earnest. Why not beat the Christmas shopping parking hassle and walk down to the Christmas Market on St. Martin's Green this Saturday December 3 from 2-5pm? A pretty sight, complete with twinkly lights. Christmas goodies will be on sale and mulled wine and carols will ease the strain. One of the stalls will sell Save the Children Christmas cards and goods in memory of the late Robin Wordsworth.

Christmas Tree Memorial Stars Service:
On Saturday December 10, at 4pm in St. Martin's Church, a short service takes place for the bereaved. There will be an opportunity to write the name of your loved one on one of the stars which will decorate the Church Christmas tree. A Memorial Roll of the loved ones will be read aloud. All welcome.

A Christmas Carol:
Now is the time to remind you of this perennial seasonal favourite, which takes place in the Banqueting Hall of Knebworth House from Friday to Sunday December 16-18. Actor Colin Greenslade will perform his dramatised reading of Charles Dickens' classic 'ghosts' story for Christmas nightly at 8pm with a Saturday matinée at 2.30pm. Cost is £21.50 to include a glass of Dickens' own-recipe punch. At the time of going to press, there are still tickets available for each performance - though precious few for some. So book now online at www.knebworthhouse.com, or call 01438 810931.

Scout/Guide Christmas Post:
In these times of economic crisis, what could be better than to have your Knebworth Christmas cards delivered for just 25p a stamp? The Scouts and Guides are again offering their amazing value postal service via the Village News, Station Road 'Knebworth Christmas Post Office'. Last collection is on Dec 17 and cards will be delivered by Dec 19. But note - only cards within Knebworth and Old Knebworth are eligible. Scouts and Guides do not include mind-reading amongst their many badges, so please put a full postal address on the envelopes.

Stuck for that perfect Christmas Gift: F
or an ex-pat Knebworthian? The fascinating pictorial history, 'Knebworth Through Time' by local historian Hugh Madgin is now available in Village News, Station Road and the Post Office, St. Martin's Road. Priced at £14.99, little-known snippets of the history of the Village are interwoven with photographs of Knebworth, Woolmer Green and Datchworth then and now.

Panicking about icing the cake?
Knebworth WI have a very timely meeting, just for you. 'Decorative Icing' is the title of their talk on Wednesday December 14 at 7.45pm in Trinity Church Hall. All welcome.
