KNEBWORTH NEWS - September 2011

From Jo Simson - 29th September

Barn Dance:
This is the week-end you get to promenade your partner up the road to the Knebworth Bowls Club Barn Dance, which in fact takes place in Woolmer Green Village Hall on Saturday October 1. Starting at 7.30pm, the ticket price of £11 includes a fish and chip supper but you need to bring your own drink. Call Pam Veale on 01438 235078  to book.

Comedy Night:
Everyone loves a laugh and Knebworth Youth Football Club invite us to its biggest comedy night yet in Knebworth Village Hall next Saturday October 8 from 8-11pm. It features Geoff Norcott, recording his fires ever live DVD with a brand new hour of hilarious stand up. Admission is by pre-booked ticket - over-18s only - and there is a licensed bar. Book tickets by post, including a cheque payable to Mrs J Wheeler, address 62 Stevenage road Knebworth, SG3 6NN. Or buy them from any Knebworth Youth Football Club Manager.

Christian Aid Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy:
If it's Autumn, it must be the annual Christian Aid Coffee Morning in Knebworth Parish Centre. Taking place this year on Saturday October 8, the Coffee morning will include a Bring-and-Buy stall, raffle and opportunity to buy TRAIDCRAFT fairly traded goods, gifts, and your first Christmas cards of the year. Plus - the results and winners of the cryptic 'Trees' quiz will be announced.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side:
With Knebworth Rambling Group, who are getting out in the countryside while there is still some left to enjoy. The next walk is on Tuesday October 3, setting out at 10am from the Village Hall car park. All welcome, including well-behaved dogs on leads.

Light and Laughter:
As the nights draw in and the gloom draws out - now is about the time when the Knebworth Family of Churches invitations to the Good Egg Club Light and Laughter party go out. Fun, games and treats but no tricks are on offer on 31 October from 6-7.30pm. All children in Reception to Year 6 welcome. No charge but donations welcome. Harvest Celebrations/Back to Church Sunday:
Don't forget that this Sunday September 25 sees the celebration of Harvest and we are all invited Back to Church to the All Age Service in St. Martin's at 10am and Evensong at St. Mary's at 6pm. Harvest will also be celebrated with a Bring and Share Supper in the St. Martin's Parish Centre at 7.30pm on Saturday 24 September. All welcome.

Twinning Visit:
If the village seems a little fuller than usual this week-end, it's probably because Knebworth Twinning Association members are hosting a visit from 34 guests from Châtelaillon Plage. The hectic schedule includes a trip to the Olympic Site and Docklands Museum this Saturday September 24, a 1940s Party in the Village Hall on Sunday September 25 and a Boules challenge at the Station Pub on Monday September 26 at 6.30pm.

Barn Dance:
If you miss out on that 1940s party (and if you didn't get your application in by September 9 you will) fear not. There is another dance around the corner. Next Saturday  October 1 to be precise. That's the date to promenade your partner to the Bowls Club Barn Dance up the road in Woolmer Green Village Hall. The dohsidohing starts at 7.30pm and finishes at 11pm. Mr Roger Dover is the caller and a fish and chip supper is supplied in the ticket price of £11, but you need to bring your own drinks and glasses. Book your tickets by calling Pam Veale on 01438 235078.

Posh Frocks:
If you are feeling a little bit more upmarket, you might like to put your glad rags on for the Friends of St. Michaels Woolmer Green School 'Enchanted Masquerade' in Knebworth Barns on October 1. Tickets for that one are £50 or £490 for a table. Call 01438 811587, or 07876 351042 to book.

Just10:
Next Sunday October 2 sees the start of an inspiring, challenging and humorous look at the Ten Commandments in the company (via DVD) of well-known evangelist J.John. Starting in reverse order, with 'Honour your Father and Mother', the sessions are in St. Martin's Church from 7-9pm. All more than welcome.

Congratulations to Beth and Katie Onyett:
Whizzkid twins Beth and Katie each chalked up straight 'A's in their recent A/S Level results in subjects including Maths, Further Maths and Science. Wow!

Knebworth Walking Group:
There is a hint of Autumn in the mellow air and the Walking Group are hoping it won't be September in the Rain when they set off from the Village Hall Car Park next Tuesday 20 September at 10am. Carole and David Woodman will be leading the group on a four-mile walk starting at the Lytton Arms in Old Knebworth and finishing with a welcome pub lunch there. Along the way there will be rich variety of berries and fungi to admire - and the leaves in New Wood will be just starting to turn to Autumn gold.

Harvest Supper:
To celebrate our blessing of daily bread and rich choice of food, we are invited to a Bring and Share Harvest Supper at 7.30pm in St. Martin's Parish Centre next Saturday 24 September.

Back to Church Sunday:
As reported last week, the services next Sunday 25 September in St. Mary's and St. Martin's Churches will be Harvest Celebrations. Sunday 25 September is Back to Church Sunday and if you haven't been for a while you are particularly warmly welcomed to the All Age Service at10am in St. Martin's and the celebration of Evensong at 6pm in St. Mary's. You will probably be given another invitation which is well worth accepting - to the Just10 course starting on Sunday 2 October, from 7-9pm in St. Martin's Parish Centre. This 10-week course looks at the relevance of the Ten Commandments to our lives through the distinctive, humorous but challenging eyes of the evangelist J.John.

Christian Aid Quiz reminder:
Have you been spending the summer wrestling with 'Trees', the cryptic quiz in aid of Christian Aid? If so, don't let all that hard work go to waste. Your entries need to be in by this Sunday 25 September. Details on the form, or contact Saxon Denning on 01438 815089.

Stephen Swann:
It is with deep sorrow that I report the sudden death of Stephen Swann. A local man, whose career began in Barclays Bank on the corner of London Road and was cut short in the accountancy department of Lowe's Builders' Merchants across the road at the far end - Stephen was well-known and well-loved around the village. He was a gifted guitarist and helped lead the worship for many Church services as well as all sorts of musical celebrations. He will be sadly missed and our deepest sympathy goes to his wife, Mary and their son, Allen.

Cake and Produce Stalls on the Green:
As exclusively predicted, I am now in a position to give you a time for the Stalls on St. Martin's Green. They are open for business from 9.30am, but it is the early shopper who picks up the best cakes and preserves, so be warned.

Cyclists are praying for fine weather for Saturday September 10 which is the date of the annual Historic Churches Trust sponsored Bike Ride from 10am-6pm. If you fancy getting on your bikes and helping Knebworth Churches at the same time, the people to contact are: Penny Paton on 01438 313241 for St. Martin's and St. Mary's, Wendy Marley on 01438 226922 for St. Thomas More and Gill Hughes on 01438 813049 for Trinity Church.

They invite anyone involved in a sport or musical activity who would like to join the team to a special meeting at 8pm next Wednesday September 14 in St. Martin's Parish Centre. All welcome.

Beyond Beads:
Well, I am not quite sure what exactly IS beyond beads, but if you would like to find out more, why not pop along to the WI meeting in Trinity Church Hall, Park Lane at 7.45pm next Wednesday 14 September? The speaker will be Jenny Pratt and the competition a necklace.

In Praise of Love:
It's master playwright Terence Rattigan's centenary year and to celebrate KATS (Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society) plan to put on one of his plays from 17-19 November. Auditions will be held next Monday 12 and Thursday 15 September. If you think you might be interested in treading the boards or helping out backstage, contact KATS Chair, Frances Farrugia, on 01438 820136 for more details.

Harvest Celebrations:
This is the time of year for bringing in the sheaves and this year's Harvest celebrations at St. Mary's and St. Martin's are linked in to Back to Church Sunday on 25 September. There will be an All Age Harvest Service at 10am in St. Martin's Church, St. Martin's Road and a Harvest Evensong at 6pm in the lovely twelfth-century Parish Church of St. Mary's in Knebworth Country Park. Busy village, busy people:
Next Saturday 10th September looks set to be buzzing. The ever-popular cake and produce stalls on St. Martin's Green will be open for business in the morning. Every news source I have checked is tight-lipped and ashen-faced regarding the exact timing, but I know it is in the morning. I feel sure someone will let me know in time to tell you next week.

Happy 80th Birthday Barbara:
Barbara Young is famed for her yummy home-made jams and preserves which until recently she sold at those stalls on the Green and elsewhere. Barbara will be celebrating being literally 80 years Young on Saturday 10th September
