KNEBWORTH NEWS - March 2011

From Jo Simson - 31st March

If you like your little bits of pudding, and would happily forego a first course, Saturday 9 April is the date for you. The Just Desserts Quiz in St. Martin's Parish Centre on does just what it says on the tin. Except that the Desserts will be home-made. Tickets are £7.50 to include multiple choices of desserts or cheeseboard, teams of 8. Contact Denise Weaver on 812553 or Janet Hammond on 812065.

You might just be able to pick up the perfect Mothering Sunday gift this Saturday 2 April at the Knebworth and District Gardening Club Spring Show in St. Martin's Parish Centre. Doors open at 2pm and if you have something you would like to exhibit Show Secretary Gill Griffin will be pleased to hear from you on 222040. A tombola, refreshments and plant stall will all be available to give value-added to your floral experience.

Free flowers will be presented to ladies in the congregation at the 10am All Age Service St. Martin's to celebrate Mothering Sunday. Knebworth School teacher Mrs Nicola Knight is giving up her Mothering Sunday lie-in to give a presentation on her work with Cambodian orphans during the service. All welcome.

Congratulations to young Isabella Maddison, who left friends and family red-nosed with disbelief when she held a 48-hour sponsored silence for Comic Relief. The silence made £250 and a cake sale on St. Martin's Green, together with friends Shenley and Erinna Lloyd, added a further £150 to the pot.

Next week-end - 8/9 April - is pretty action-packed in Knebworth. In addition to the aforementioned Just Desserts Quiz in the Parish Centre, the ladies of the WI invite us to a Spring Sale there from 10am-12noon. Bargains on offer include an as new stall, jewellery, cards, home-made cakes and bric-a-brac. And for those nostalgic for the good old days of the real bargain - a jumble stall. For further details contact Pam Culley on 814749.

The Knebworth Players are offering something for everyone at 8pm on 8 and 9 February in the Village Hall, with a pot pourri of entertainment including a one act play called The Allotment (very topical) by Gillian Plowman. Full details next week.

From Jo Simson - 24th March

Jean Mafham of the Danesbury Shop, and other traders in the village, are hopping mad about proposals to bring in car park charges in the St. Martin's Road Car Park. Jean has already presented a petition with 400 signatures on it to North Herts. District Council. Her argument is that traders and employees will be stuck for parking, and trade in the village will drop off. North Herts. District Council maintain that the charges will mean increased turnover in the car park giving more parking to those wishing to use the shops and businesses in the village. Charges will be applicable on Mondays to Saturdays from 9am - 6pm: 20p up to 30 minutes, 50p up to one hour, £1 up to two hours, £2 up to 3 hours and £4 up to 4 hours, with a maximum stay of 4 hours. If you wish to make your views known, contact Simon Young, Planning Services, North Hertfordshire District Council, Gernon Road, Letchworth Garden City, Herts, SG6 3JF or email Click Here by 5pm on Friday 1 April.

Don't forget this is the week-end when the Pub is the Hub. This Friday 25 the Station Pub hosts a night at the races for Knebworth Football Club from 7pm. On Sunday 27 March the Lytton Arms get quizzical when the pub host the Cats Protection League Quiz Night from 8pm. Teams of up to four people at £2 a head. Sandwiched in between St. Mary's and St. Martin's hold their annual Parochial Church Meeting on Sunday 27 March at 6pm in St. Martin's Parish Centre. There are currently vacancies for Churchwardens and PCC members, so it should prove to be an interesting meeting. Earlier in the day there will be a celebration of Bob and Christine Baker's Diamond Wedding Anniversary following the 10am Service in St. Martin's. Long and happy marriages are clearly a feature of Church life. Linda and Kevin Smith recently celebrated their Ruby Anniversary and Church Treasurer Cynthia and her husband George reached their Golden last Friday 18 March. Many congratulations to them all.

A Spring refurbishment at Deanscroft Sheltered Housing gives you the opportunity to spruce up your conservatory at bargain prices. I can vouch for the stylishness of the wicker conservatory furniture being offered at the Tenants' Sale next Monday 21 March from 9am-4pm. Furniture on offer includes a two seater settee with chairs, wall pictures, table lamps and a wicker flower vase.

Knebworth's own Sam Brown will be amongst the choristers serenading us at the Wadham College Chapel Choir 'Oxford in Spring' concert this Saturday 19 March at 7pm in Trinity Church. The concert takes its title from Oxford University's recently finished Hilary, or Spring, term. Sam can be forgiven for not recognising much of his home village. He moved away when he was just three. Concert tickets £6 (£4 concessions, under-18s free) available on the door.

Next week-end the Pub is the Hub of village social life. On Friday 25 the Station Pub hosts a night at the races for Knebworth Football Club from 7pm. Sponsored by Cawdor stone specialists, with support from Raja Tandoori, MH Goldsmith roofing and the Fire Protection company, If you always wanted to own a race horse, now is your opportunity for just £2. You get to choose your horse's name and the 'owner' of the winning horse receives £10. Contact Stuart Biddle for more information on 07974938651 or Click Here.

On Sunday 27 March the Lytton Arms get quizzical when the host the Cats Protection League Quiz Night. Steve Nye will be asking the questions, curry is available for just £5.95 and if you don't win the quiz, you might just win on the raffle. The fun starts at 8pm and your team can have up to four people at £2 a head.

The answer to the destination of the ramble setting off from the Village Hall Car Park next Tuesday 22 March is anybody's guess at the moment, though I am sure that the ramble leaders have it well in hand. Walks are between three and five miles, sett off at 10am and all, including well-behaved dogs on leads, are welcome.

From Jo Simson - 10th March

This year's dates are 19-21 April and the Club will be celebrating its tenth birthday. To mark the occasion they are looking for a new name and new logo to take them into the next decade. All entering designs will be displayed during the sessions and voted on. The winning designer will receive a Fair Trade Chocolate egg.
