KNEBWORTH NEWS - February 2011

From Jo Simson - 23rd February

There has been a Ballroom Dance Club in some form in Knebworth Village Hall since the 1950s. Sadly, however, Mr Michael Young, one of the co-organisers of the Sequence Dance Club as it was now known, which met on Mondays, died recently and the Club is no longer meeting.

This Sunday 27 February is the fourth in the month, so local food shoppers can get a treat at the monthly Farmers' Market just up the road in Woolmer Green Village Hall from 9am-12noon.

Like buses, another opportunity to buy home-baked goodies will follow hard on its heels. February is deceptively short, so Saturday 5 March is only just over a week away and from 10am-11.30am there will be home-made cakes, pastries cheese and vegetables available at the Stalls on the Green, in aid of St. Mary's and St. Martin's Church funds. There will also be an intriguingly-named remnant stall.

If all those home-made goodies make you feel slightly over-indulged, you can always 'treat' yourselves to a Frugal Lunch with Christian Aid in St. Thomas More Church Hall on Sunday 13 March. Details and tickets from Christian Aid Committee Chairman, Saxon Denning on 815089.

The Women's World 'Day' of prayer is a very long 'day' indeed. It starts in Tonga and finishes around 35 hours later in Samoa. In Knebworth it takes place this year on Friday 4 March at 2pm in St. Martin's Church. Prepared this year by the women of Chile, the theme is How Many Loaves Have You? The service is prepared by women but it people of all ages and genders are welcome to join in the worship and learn a little more about Chile along the way.

The children of Knebworth School - not to mention their teachers - are currently enjoying a Half Term break. When they go back next week, they will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 3 March.

If you've ever wondered why, despite your best efforts, those daffodils and leeks in your garden never match up to the ones you see at Horticultural Society shows, now is your chance to take steps to get the fruits of your labours up to exhibition class. Come along to the Knebworth and District Gardening Club Pre Show Evening next Wednesday 23 February at 8pm in St. Martin's Parish Centre. Judges and Committee members will be delighted to talk to you about growing, showing and displaying exhibits in advance of the Spring Show on 2 April. Refreshments and a raffle will also be on offer. For further details contact Club Secretary Sheila Read on 318441.

Now that days are drawing out and the sun is peeping shyly through the clouds, if you want to get out and about further than the garden, the Knebworth Walking Group invite you to join them for a ramble next Tuesday 22 February, setting out at 10am. The route will take in countryside to the north of Ware and finish at the Robin Hood and Little John pub at Tonwell for lunch.

Spring is definitely around the corner. The doughty ladies of the congregation of St. Mary's and St. Martin's are holding a cake stall on 5 March on St. Martin's Green in aid of church funds. Savoury pastries and scones will also be on offer.

Here's a job opportunity for you. Anthony Titmarsh has stood down from the Parish Council after many years of sterling service, creating a vacancy for a co-opted member. If you are over eighteen, live in the parish and are interested in serving the community in this way, contact the Clerk to the Parish Council, Claire Graham 813795, clerk@knebworthpc.org.uk or the Parish Council Chairman John Bantick on 812761 for more details.

From Jo Simson - 3rd February

All of us are in the gutter, said Oscar Wilde, but some of us are looking at the stars. Welwyn-based charity CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) Hertfordshire are asking us to look at them this week. Just count the number of stars you can see in the constellation of Orion on any clear evening after 7pm. Your answers will help the charity map light pollution. Visit www.cpreherts.org.uk for full instructions.

There will be stars on stage this week-end. Knebworth Players' production of Look Who's Talking by Derek Benfield opens tonight, Thursday 3 Feb at 8pm in the Village Hall and runs till Saturday 5 February. Sheila and Andrew, a devoted middle-aged couple, are settling down to a normal, relaxed Sunday. But then, two totally unexpected visitors wander in, both anticipating the flowering of relationships with either Sheila or Andrew, who each weave an elaborate web of lies and half-truths to hide their own possible infidelities, creating an hilarious series of misunderstandings and mistaken identities. Tickets £7 (concessions £6, not Saturday) are available from Village News in Station Road or on the door.

There are still plenty of tickets for both that show and the Barn Dance next week-end on Saturday 12 February. There will be some Hot diggety Dogs to help you enjoy the hoe-down and the live band, the Coproliters, are guaranteed to get you stripping the willow. For details call 811795.

This is the week when you might have some difficulty reaching the Village Hall as a section of Station Road is due to be closed overnight from 10pm-5am for mysterious 'signage works' to the railway bridge. And this is the month when a consultation is due on the proposed car park charges for the St. Martin's Road car park. Details of the Traffic Regulation Order will be published on North Herts. District Council website www.north-herts.gov.uk and in the local press for those wishing to make representations.

Next week you get the chance to go for a walk with the Knebworth Rambling Group, setting off at 10am from the Village Hall Car Park on Tuesday 8 February.

Next week is also the scene of further dramatic events in the Village Hall when KATS (Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society) hold auditions for their May production. All welcome at 8pm on Monday 7 and/or Thursday 10 February. Contact Jo Simson on 814166 for further details.
