As the clocks go back this week-end to usher in, 'No warmth, no health, no cheerful ease - November', there are plenty of week-end opportunities in Knebworth to stave off the blues.

The Knebworth Family of Churches Good Egg Club Light and Laughter Party this Sunday 31 October from 6-7.30pm in the Parish Centre offers loads of laughter, pumpkin lanterns, apple-bobbing, dunking in gunk, games, lots of treats but no tricks. Admission free, but you need to book. Contact Gill Hughes on 813049.

Sunday 31 October might seem an odd day to be putting on a concert, but what a treat it will be when the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Châtelaillon-Plage round off their week-end visit with a joint concert with Stevenage Male voice Choir and Hitchin Symphony Orchestra at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Pre-booking is also essential for this one. Tickets £6 (£5 for hosts and Knebworth Twinning Association members, under 16s £1). Contact KTA Chair Joy Hall on 812609.

Lessiters Chocolate have cheerful news for children. All they have to do is answer the simple question Which of these beans is used to make chocolate a) cocoa, b) runner, c) jelly? Bring your answers in to the shop at 61 London Road SG3 6JE to collect a free entry prize and a chance to win a cauldron filled with chocolate. But you have to do it by this Saturday 30 October.

Next Sunday 7 November, Datchworth Sports Club is hosting its popular Firework Display with musical accompaniment, from 6.30pm. A barbecue, licensed bar and hot drinks will help the evening go with a swing, but please note sparklers are not allowed. Tickets £6, concessions £3, call 812490.

Nothing better for blowing the cobwebs away and lifting the spirits than a bracing walk. Knebworth walking group invite you to join them next Tuesday 2 November to do just that, setting off at 10am from the Village Hall Car Park. All welcome, including well-behaved dogs on leads.

Congratulations to Margaret Webb, who knows her rivers. And proved it by winning the Christian Aid 'Rivers' Quiz, which entrants found particularly difficult this year. The result was announced at the recent Christian Aid Coffee Morning, which raised £327.80, and also sold £750-worth of Fairly Traded goods.

If you are looking for entertainment this week-end, don't forget Knebworth Players are presenting the hilarious 'The Haunted Through Lounge & Recessed Dining Nook at Farndale Castle' in the Village Hall tonight, tomorrow and Saturday at 8pm. Tickets £7 (concessions £6) on the door or call 743788.

Next week-end is packed with opportunities for all ages. If you are eligible for a Flu' Jab there is a Saturday Clinic on 30 October from 8.30am-1pm in the Surgery. To check eligibility/book an appointment, call the Surgery on 812494.

Next week is Half-Term week, of course, and up at Knebworth House Gardens the popular Pumpkin Trail and Treats will be running Thursday Friday and Saturday 27-29 Ocober from 12noon-4.30pm. Tickets £2 adults, £4.50 2-16 year olds. Highlights include fancy dress and best-dressed pumpkin competitions. Call 810931 to book.
