Knebworth Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Leaders celebrating St George’s Day 2010

Scouts and Guides in our village since the 1920’s. We now have 7 units serving over 130 children and young people from ages 5 to 18 years. The majority live in Knebworth but some also join us from Stevenage and neighbouring villages. Participation enables young people to retain friends and links in the village when they move to secondary schools in neighbouring towns.
• Membership is open to all and most units have waiting lists.
• In total, we have 25 Scout and Guide Leaders and several Young Leaders running the 7 units.
• Activities range from cooking, crafts and charity fundraising to abseiling, rafting and hill walking. There are also opportunities for residential events, camps and overseas travel.
• Our aim is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.
• Children are encouraged to be involved in our village community – annual events include the Fete on St Martin’s Green, St George’s Day Parade and the Remembrance Day Service. The Scouts and Guides organise a village

Christmas Post each year and also help to deliver Village Festival publicity leaflets. Brownies usually visit one of the homes for the elderly at Christmas to sing carols.
• The Group has strong links with neighbouring communities – Scouting units often have joint activities with Stevenage Cubs, Scouts and Beavers. They participate in District, County and National camping, activity, and sporting events. Several members have attended World Jamborees. The annual Parent and Scout weekend hill-walking expedition is a highlight of the year. Our Guiding units work closely with units in Datchworth, Woolmer Green and Oaklands which together form the Knebworth Guiding District.
Summer Camp
Summer Term Guide Camp, 2009
There are several district-wide events each year including camps, outings, Thinking Day, Gang Show and Christmas parties. As part of the Girlguiding Stevenage Division, girls also participate in division events such as a recent fun day and camp at Wymondley Wood for over 400 girls.
• Older Scouts and Guides (14+) are able to move on to Stevenage Explorer Scouts or Knebworth District Rangers based in Datchworth.
• We are fortunate to have our own premises, built by volunteers on land donated many years ago by the Knebworth Estate. The premises and Group finances are managed by a Group Management Committee comprising

12 volunteers including leader and parent representatives.
• Activities and overheads are funded through termly subs, fundraising events and some grant funding (recent grants have been received from Knebworth Village Trust, North Hertfordshire District Council and Hertfordshire Community Foundation).
• Local businesses are very supportive of the Group giving help with fundraising, donations and raffle prizes. Guides recently planted Centenary Roses in the gardens at Knebworth House.
• All adults involved in the running of the units and Group are volunteers.
