'5 in cinq' at Benington Barns
September 2010

Open Studios 2010, the Long Barn at Benington are hosting a combination of 5 local artists showing their works and demonstrating their skills to the public. There is no charge and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy learning more about the five dedicated and exciting artists.

The ‘five’ in question are photographer, Trevor Attwood, from New Barnet who encourages the viewer to see the urban environment from a different perspective.

Julie D Cooper of St Albans has a great passion for colour. She enjoys the vibrancy and energy this gives. Her work builds with colour and uses personal expression in developing an abstract language.

Closer to home, Judith MacKay from Benington, works in a variety of media enjoying using acrylics to capture the Hertfordshire landscape, but much of her work is also inspired by visits to South Africa and Spain.

From Welwyn village, Fiona Pruden is the fourth member of the group specialising in contemporary applications with watercolours. In 2010 she launched her own brand of ‘WICKED WATERCOLOURS’ (...the devil of a medium...) including wicked brushes hand-made in Hertfordshire. She writes a regular column for the Welwyn & Hatfield Times Magazine and ‘ARTicles’ for Leisure Painter and Paint magazines.

Finally, we are delighted to include the unusual talents of Carol Winton, from Bedfordshire, who uses specialist yarns in her designs, developing an exceptional vision of the texture in colour. Her product ranges included ‘a mat for the cat’ who deserves a bit of individuality and the sooooo… comfortable dog rug, not forgetting a little something for the humans, the all season accessory “skinnies”.

With such a diverse range of works to be seen and talents to be taken in, it’s well worth making a note of the dates and times throughout September.
Different combinations of the artists will be working at the Long Barn, Brandsmead, 1 Whempstead Road, Benington, SG2 7BX on Saturdays and Sundays 11/12th, 18/19th & 25/26th September 2010 from 10.00am to 4.00pm - so it may be worth checking out the exact dates and times for a particular artist on the HVAF website www.hvaf.org.uk

The recognisable dayglo yellow ‘OPEN STUDIO’ signs will be put up in advance to help everyone find the Long Barn, so come along and enjoy a feast of colours, textures and subjects but best of all, see the artists working, learn more about how they do what they do and ask whatever questions you like.

The ‘5 in cinq’ at The Long Barn, Benington, are amongst many Hertfordshire artists who will be delighted to open their studios and invite all comers to drop in. Entry is completely free and refreshments will be available, so make a note to come along.

For more information, or to arrange a special viewing time, please contact Judith MacKay on 07981 526336 or one of the other artists
