"Day of Reckoning"

Knebworth Players next presentation is ‘Day Of Reckoning’, a bittersweet comedy by Pam Valentine.

The summer fete committee of a typical British village meets on a cold January night to discuss arrangements for that year’s fete. As committee protocol gives way to bickering and gossip, we begin to see the personalities of those present – and a real mixed bag they are! There’s Ethel, who knows everything about everyone and makes sure she shares the gossip; Pauline, the vicar’s long-suffering wife; Gloria, exhausted and unfulfilled by caring for her elderly mother; horsey Marjorie who is very attentive to the shy new teacher, Angela; elderly Mavis who chooses when to play deaf and Sally, the brisk army wife. In the midst of them all is the vicar, around whom much innuendo abounds and who enjoys more than his fair share of the communion wine! Thus the scene is set for much bantering, gossip and misunderstanding as they plan the forthcoming summer fete.

But it is in Act II, during and after the fete, that the secrets and hidden agendas of the ‘ordinary’ people unravel. Much has happened to everyone six months on, and not all of it predictable! The cathartic events of the fete are played out with humour and pathos, and the upbeat ending affirms the enduring value of village life.

This bittersweet comedy features a strong Knebworth Players cast and is directed by Clive George.

Performances are from 7th – 9th February, at 8pm in Knebworth Village Hall, Tickets available by calling the box office on 01438 224113 or from Village News. Tickets £6, concessions £5* (*not Saturday)`
