PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

September 2008

Spring has sprung!
Unfortunately at the time of writing this article the Aerial Runway on the Main Recreation Ground is out of use. We apologise for this. Constant use and some misuse has meant that, once again, the spring that slows it down before it hits the rubber buffer has again broken. This is probably caused by 2 or 3 people sitting on the seat when it is only designed for single occupancy. Wickstead Leisure Ltd, the manufacturer used to provide replacement springs but have now stopped producing them. They say the spring is not needed. ROSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) regularly inspect all our play equipment and they maintain that the spring needs to be present. The Runway will, unfortunately, remain out of action until ROSPA and Wickstead Leisure Ltd resolve their differences and offer us a safe solution.

No climbing
Youth Shelters are not part of ROSPA`s remit and there are no current safety regulations relating to them. None-the-less this year ROSPA advised that it is too easy to climb onto the roof of the Youth Shelter on the Recreation Ground and young folk could fall off and hurt themselves. My personal feeling is that this is a good way of teaching risk management but wearing my public face I and the Parish Council have no choice but to take ROSPA`s advice. So, eventually, the Youth Shelter could be sporting a “No climbing on the roof” notice which will be backed up by a coat of non drying paint on the roof. Parents please warn your offspring.

Litter
During part of August our weekend Recreation Ground litter picker was away and so was our groundsman who deals with litter during the week and also empties the rubbish and dog litter bins in the Recreation Ground and Lytton Fields. On your behalf I'd like to thank Parish Councillors Rosemary Pateman, John Hunt and Elisabeth, Carol and Robin Smith for assisting me in covering these duties in order to keep our facilities tidy.
