War Memorial Cleaned
On Monday 6th November, three Parish Councillors,
Graham Fothergill, Barry Hall and Anthony Titmarsh, spent some time cleaning
the wall surrounding the War Memorial in preparation for the Remembrance
Service which was held on 12th November. The Memorial itself is in need of
restoration, a task that the councillors are unable to perform and enquiries
are in hand to ascertain cost and viability for this to be done
professionally. Thanks to Mr & Mrs R. Campbell – Wright of Jubilee Lodge
East for allowing us access to water supply and to Anthony for the use of
his power cleaner. Additional thanks to Graham Fothergill who painted all
the posts and the surrounding chain.
Remembrance Sunday service
The large number of residents who attended our
Remembrance Sunday service at the War Memorial now know who cleaned the
wall. The base of the memorial was cleaned professionally and we are now
working towards the renovation of the top section. Thanks to Rev Jim Pye for
taking the service, to Knebworth Village School of the loan of their
excellent loudspeaker system and to David Cox for playing The Last Post and
Reveille so beautifully.
Did you know......?
Recently, while in conversation with a Knebworth
resident, I realised that they were not aware that we have 3 recreation
grounds in Knebworth. The main recreation ground at Watton Road, Lytton
Fields and the King George the Fifth playing field (KGV) in Old Knebworth.
These are all maintained by our one groundsman, Andrew, a full time job
which has been made a little easier by our recent acquisition of a triple
mower that goes a lot faster than our previous one did. Andrew is a jovial
man who will readily engage in conversation with members of the public.
While the odd 5 minute chat is neither here nor there it is probably true to
say that those visitors to the recreation ground who regularly engage Andrew
in conversation for half an hour or more are not allowing him to get on with
his work. He is too polite to say this himself.
Play equipment
On 7th November a small but very helpful group of residents met with our
clerk and 3 Parish Councillors to discuss play equipment provision on all
three playing fields. It was a most productive meeting. Many of their
suggestions will be incorporated into a grant application for a massive
amount of funding to repair/replace play equipment on the main recreation
ground and KGV. We have taken on board the idea that we should fence off the
play equipment area in Lytton Fields but unfortunately this will not happen
immediately.
